Foothills School Division is committed to providing the best learning opportunities for all students. Through the Learning Support Program, students, classroom teachers and schools receive support and resources to optimize student learning.
The Learning Support Program emphasizes teamwork between educators, parents and community agencies to address the unique needs of students.
For most students, the use of instructional approaches, known to be effective in meeting a range of learning needs in the classroom, is sufficient. If more extensive assistance is required to help a student learn, the next step is to involve the Learning support Teacher.
The school-based team, comprised of a variety of staff members, may be assembled in order to provide further suggestions to resolve the problem. A modified or adjusted program for the student is implemented. The Learning Support Teacher and/or Educational Assistant assist the classroom teacher in carrying out the plan.
If the modified program is found to be insufficient, or if the teacher and school-based team require extra assistance in meeting a student's needs, the school forms a close partnership with the parent in developing and implementing an Individualized Program Plan. The student's program is monitored and reviewed for success on a regular basis.
The Learning Support Teacher (LST) plays a key role in providing quality learning and teaching in Foothills schools including:
- Assisting in the development of programs for students;
- Providing in-service for staff on meeting the learning and/or behaviour challenges in the regular classroom;
- Collaborating in the development and implementation of Individual Program Plans;
- Facilitating School-Based Team meetings;
- Coordinating and supporting the work of Assistants;
- Facilitating parent conferences, case conferences and meetings with other agencies;
- Educational assessment;
- Locating resources for all stakeholders;
- Facilitating transition planning;
- Whole class, small group and individual instruction.
The Educational Assistant (EA) typically works with a variety of special needs students under the direction of the Learning Support Teacher. EA's work to support a positive classroom learning environment for all students while providing flexible support to all students within their assigned area.
