Students registered in Foothills School Division, and attending a Foothills' school within their designated attendance boundary, are eligible for no-fee bus transportation when they reside 2.4 km. or greater distance from their designated school.
Students directed by the Board to attend a Foothills' school outside their attendance boundary, for a program approved by Alberta Education, will be eligible for no-fee transportation when they reside 2.4 km. or greater distance from the designated school (students in kindergarten through grade three are eligible beyond 1.6 km.) or if they do not have an older sibling with whom to walk.
Foothills students directed or approved by the Board to attend schools in another jurisdiction will be provided transportation subject to the following conditions:
- At the Board's discretion, transportation will be by regular school bus, taxi service or a parent provided transportation allowance;
- No fees will be charged.
Changes to Foothills School Division attendance boundaries will be established in accordance with Provincial regulations and communicated clearly to parents, staff and communities. Changes to attendance boundaries are final and binding; parents may request their child continue attendance at their original location subject to available space in the school and approval of this request by the Board. Students will be eligible for transportation at no cost only to the school in their designated attendance boundary.
Foothills' parents who choose, pursuant to the School Act, to redirect children to a Foothills school outside their attendance boundary may be provided transportation subject to the following conditions:
- The student resides at least 2.4 kilometers from the school;
- The bus route is not changed to pickup/drop off the student;
- The bus route timetable is not increased exponentially;
- There is room on the bus once all eligible students are accommodated;
- Transportation will be subject to annual review;
- Fees may be charged.
Parents resident within Foothills School Division who choose, pursuant to the School Act, to redirect children to a different school jusidiction will not be provided with transportation by Foothills School Division.
Students resident outside the boundary of Foothills School Division, yet choosing to attend Foothills' schools, may be provided transportation subject to the following conditions:
- The route will not be changed to pickup/drop off the student unless there is agreement with the student's resident Board;
- The bus route time table is not increased exponentially;
- There is room on the bus once all eligible students are accommodated;
- Transportation will be subject to annual review;
- Fees will be charged.
Foothills students who reside fewer than 2.4 kilometers (by the most direct route on a legal roadway) may be provided transportation subject to the following conditions:
- The route is not changed to pickup/drop off the student;
- The bus route time table is not increased exponentially;
- There is room on the bus once all eligible students are accommodated;
- Transportation will be subject to annual review;
- Fees will be charged.
Foothills School Division students will be transported in accordance with the Alberta Student Funding Manual for School Transportation Regulation Authorities.
Foothills School Division believes the following issues are critical in operating an efficient and effective transportation system:
- Ride times: Foothills will endeavour to keep student ride time to less than one hour (10% margin of allowance);
- Age of Fleet: Foothills busses have a replacement schedule of 12 years;
- Walk Distances: Foothills busses will not enter cul-de-sacs that are less than 800m. in length.
