The Board acknowledges the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta and the Métis Nation of Alberta Region 3.

Presentation: Oilfields High School

Principal Chet Musgrove and Vice Principal Tim Hasiuk presented.  The school’s commitment is to:

  • design rigorous and relevant learning
  • utilize mastery learning instructional strategies
  • apply strong assessment practice to help learners grow
  • respond to the needs and strengths of learners
  • and challenge learners to apply their understanding in relevant and novel ways.

Administration explained the supports in place for students and the opportunities available to students including extracurricular programs.  The school leadership team spoke about their plans and activities that engage, support, and provide success for their students, staff team, and school community.

Millarville Reconfiguration

At the Foothills School Division Board meeting, held on November 13 2019, it was decided that Millarville Community School will remain a Kindergarten to Grade 8 grade configuration.  After reviewing the online feedback and a report generated by School Division administration, the Board of Trustees voted to defeat a motion to reconfigure Millarville Community School.  This decision was made after reflective and careful consideration to the information received both at the in person and online consultations.  The Board was appreciative of the additional feedback given in addition to the configuration being debated and felt that this information should be discussed further and perhaps considered by the Board at a later date in time.

Policy 1 - Division Foundational Statements

The Board accepted final reading.  Policy 1 – Division Foundational Statements received first reading on September 4, 2019.  It was further reviewed extensively by stakeholders including staff, students, and the broader community.  The edited version incorporating 40 changes based on consultation feedback was presented and is available online.

Classroom / Program Innovative Projects

Assistant Superintendent Caroline Roberts and Trustee Sharon Nichols presented on behalf of the CPIP Committee.  Collaborative teams of staff, students and parents of Foothills School Division were encouraged and invited to submit proposals for the Classroom Practice Innovative Projects Grant from Foothills School Division Board of Trustees.  Proposed innovative and creative projects must meet the criteria outlined in the application and be aligned with Foothills School Division’s mission, beliefs and commitments.  Seventeen applications were made, four of which were approved by the Board of Trustees:

  • Mindful and Therapeutic Drumming Program – Dr Morris Gibson School – $11,500
  • Music Composition Project – Ecole Senator Riley School – $6,000
  • Technology and Deep Learning Project – Meadow Ridge School – $5,000
  • Indigenous Student Support Initiative – Oilfields High School – $15,000 Year 1 / $15,000 Year 2

It was stated that FSD will always endeavor to provide quality education to all students regardless of the economic climate.

Budget Update Report

Administration reported on the impact that the recently released Provincial Budget will have on Foothills School Division.  Reductions in class size funding and the school fee grant coupled with increases in insurance costs will move the current projected deficit from $2.6 million to approximately $4.4 million.  The Division will be moving forward with a public consultation process on how to best meet these challenges for this and future years.

Board Chair Larry Albrecht reiterated that it is our mission to provide high quality education for our students.

Board Self Evaluation

The Board recently spent time evaluating their work over the past year.  The Board has also set goals for this current year.  Board Chair Albrecht applauded the work of the Trustees in terms of keeping track of the work being done throughout the year.  Appreciation was given to Superintendent Fuzessy and all staff for working productively with them.

Public Announcements / Recognition / Division Highlights

  • Trustees attended many Remembrance Day services throughout the Division and thanked the organizers and parents involved.  It was noted how engaged and actively involved our students were and the amazing support provided by families, the Legion, RCMP, and community members.  Trustee Molyneux mentioned the indigenous contributions to the ceremonies at Oilfields High and Longview Schools which was particularly moving.
