Board Highlights - November 27

The Board acknowledges the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta and the Métis Nation of Alberta Region 3.

 

Presentation: Community Literacy - CPIP Presentation

Ecole Joe Clark School Principal Sarah Clark and Cayley Jackson spoke about the “One District One Book Program”.  This program was designed to improve literacy rates by encouraging families to read at home for 15 minutes a day.  Age appropriate resources are made available to promote a culture of literacy through an organization called www.readtothem.org.  This program is now expanding to include other High River schools with elementary grades (Spitzee Elementary) participating and older students (Senator Riley and Ecole Secondaire Highwood High School) acting as mentors.

 

Audit Committee Report

Drew Chipman, Assistant Superintendent Corporate Services and Denise Gow, Director of Finance, provided an audit committee report of the Audited Financial Statements for the Year Ended August 31, 2019.  The auditors highlighted that it was a ‘clean audit’, no recommendations for changes were included.  It was indicated that the Division manages its fiscal responsibilities very well.

 

French Immersion and French as a Second Language

Shelley Zorn, French Services Facilitator, presented to the Board.  Her report included a variety of topics including:

  • Celebration of students & teachers
  • Professional learning opportunities
  • Learning experiences & resources
  • Support of the French Immersion program
  • PAT & DIP results
  • Areas of growth and improvement

 

Financial Update

Accountability Measures Overview

Assistant Superintendent, Caroline Roberts presented an overview of the accountability measures.  The road map of continuous improvement is outlined in Board Policy 1 – Division Foundational Statements through the:

Mission: Each learner entrusted to our care has unique gifts and abilities. It is our mission to find out what these are… Explore them… Develop them… Celebrate them!

Core Values:

  • Commitment to providing rich, responsive, meaningful and appropriate learning experiences for our learners and in our communities across the Division.
  • Commitment to providing flexible, equitable, safe and caring learning environments for our learners and in our communities that embrace diversity across the Division; and, where all learners and shareholders feel a sense of belonging.
  • Commitment to engaging meaningfully with our learners and communities.

Key Priorities:

  • Ensure and maintain Division wide excellence in teaching, learning and school/Division leadership.
  • Ensure and maintain Division wide learning contexts that are safe, supportive, reflective and respectful of all learners and community members.
  • Ensure and maintain Division wide engagement that is timely, meaningful and truly collaborative with all learners and communities.
    • Stakeholders communicate, collaborate, think critically and solve problems in iterative cycles to advance educational excellence by reviewing and analyzing Accountability and Assurance measures, data and evidence on an ongoing basis throughout the year to identify impact, strengths and areas for improvement to refine educational strategic plans moving forward.
    • Strategic and Education Plans are developed in consultation and collaboration with stakeholders from September to November.
    • Ongoing support in the development and deployment of Education Plans is provided through divisional supports and communities of practice.
    • Accountability and Assurance measures, data and evidence, as well as, Education Plans for the current school year are shared with stakeholders starting in November and addressed ongoing throughout the school year (Ex. School Council and Board Meetings).
    • The draft Foothills School Division Three-Year Education Plan will be shared with the Board of Trustees for review and input by December 2019.

Approval of the Education Plan will occur at a Board Meeting in January, 2020 and then submitted to Alberta Education. 

 

Foothills School Division Education Plan

Assistant Superintendent, Caroline Roberts presented an overview of the Education Plan with a focus on the Strategic Plan, Action Items, and Measures in the following categories:

  • Engagement for Each Learner
  • Support for Each Learner
  • Success for Each Learner

 

 

Assurance and Funding Consultation Plan

 

Christopher Fuzessy, Superintendent of Schools, spoke of an engagement plan that has been developed for public consultation.  The plan will follow an Assurance model and consult upon budget 20-21 as well as the 3 Year Education Plan.  The finalized plan will be presented at the next board meeting.

 

 

Public Announcements / Recognition / Division Highlights

  • Trustees enjoyed a successful first Council of School Councils (COSC) meeting on November 25, 2019 for the 2019/20 school year.  A new Foothills COSC Facebook group has been developed to encourage participation and help build connections.
  • Congratulations to ESFCHS/AHSFA graduate Hunter Karl for the winning touchdown for the University of Calgary at the 55th Vanier Cup.
  • Thank you to Wayne McNeil, co-founder of The Respect Group who presented FSD with a small token of appreciation.  The Respect program is mandatory for all staff and volunteers within Foothills School Division and FSD was an Alberta and Canadian first in implementing this programming.
  • A new Director of Facilities Services has been announced, Ming Tian joins us in January 2020.
  • Thank you to the Town of High River and Parks & Rec for their successful Youth Day to benefit local students.
  • Congratulations to all new members of the ATA who participated in the Induction Ceremony.
  • Welcome to our new Canadian Citizens, a Citizenship Ceremony was held at Ecole Secondaire Highwood High School on November 19, 2019.
  • Westmount School Council was pleased to implement the Dare to Care Program.
  • The Board of Trustees received a very positive testimonial of the Outdoor Education program running within the Division.
  • Thank you to Ecole Joe Clark School council for their CPIP application on One Community One Book.
