Transportation Update - Extreme Cold

January 17, 2020 - 7:00am

Transportation is running this morning.  Some isolated cancellations exist due to extreme cold and mechanical failture.  Please visit this webpage to check your bus status.

Students shouldn’t be left unattended at bus stops or spend any extended time outdoors.  Cold weather and heavy snowfalls can result in unavoidable bus delays.  Families should form an emergency plan with their children so students have clear instructions about what to do if their bus doesn’t arrive.

January 16, 2020 - 1:30pm

Foothills School Division will be operating transportation services tomorrow as temperatures begin to warm across the region.

School buses will be RUNNING for Friday January 17, 2020.  All in-town and rural routes are scheduled to resume.

Individual bus drivers will determine if a route is safe to proceed and will attempt to contact parents / guardians if cancellations occur.  Families are encouraged to have alternate arrangements in the event bus services are unavailable.  We will be sharing route delays and cancellations as early as 6:30am on this webpage.

Please contact your school with any questions regarding scheduled outdoor activities or field trips.

January 15, 2020 - 5:30pm

Environment Canada has forecasted temperatures exceeding -40C for tomorrow morning.  To assist families with making alternate arrangements, Foothills School Division is informing families in advance that transportation services will continue to be cancelled due to extreme cold weather conditions.

School buses are CANCELLED for Thursday January 16, 2020. All in-town and rural routes are cancelled. Scheduled field trips requiring transportation will also be cancelled.

Schools will remain OPEN. Please be aware that if you transport your child in the morning you will also be required to provide transportation home at the regular school dismissal time.

We respect that parents have the primary role in deciding if their children will attend classes.  Safety remains a priority so please ensure you report any absences to your school.

January 15, 2020 - 6:00am

Winter temperatures continue to drop across the Foothills region.

School buses are CANCELLED for Wednesday January 15, 2020. All in-town and rural routes are cancelled. Scheduled field trips requiring transportation will also be cancelled.

Schools will remain OPEN. Please be aware that if you transport your child in the morning you will also be required to provide transportation home at the regular school dismissal time.

We respect the decisions parents make to keep their children at home when transportation circumstances make travel unsafe. When attendance is low due to winter weather, teachers are asked to provide meaningful instruction in the form of review, practice, and enrichment. Any essential learning or activities that occur will be replicated for absent students upon their return.

It is important for parents and students who may be walking to school to recognize the hazards of extreme cold.  Frostbite is a serious condition in which body tissues freeze. It happens most often in the fingers, toes, ears, and nose. It often starts as skin that is paler than usual and then progresses to a white waxy appearance.  Anyone spending time outdoors today should:

  • Cover your head and body by wearing a hat and layers of tightly woven fabrics such as wool or synthetics.
  • Cover up exposed areas such as your fingers, cheeks, ears, and nose.
  • If your clothes get wet when you are in the cold, change into dry clothes as soon as possible.
  • Drink plenty of warm fluids, avoiding caffeine, to help your body stay warm.

High school students writing diploma level final exams need to make every effort to safely attend school during their scheduled exam date. Diploma level final exams are not cancelled or postponed by Alberta Education.  Students unable to attend a diploma exam may be able to write at a future date (April / June) or get an exemption.  For further details, visit https://alberta.ca/writing-diploma-exams.aspx.

January 14, 2020 - 9:00pm

Extreme cold weather conditions continue across Foothills School Division. Individual bus drivers will determine if a route is safe to proceed and will contact parents / guardians if cancellations occur.  Families are encouraged to have alternate arrangements in the event bus services are unavailable.  We will be sharing route delays and cancellations as early as 6:30am on this webpage.

Please ensure that students are dressed appropriately for the weather and that children are not left unattended at bus stops. Students driving to school should exercise caution and only do so if they feel capable and comfortable with the road conditions.

As always, the safety of students is our utmost concern, we ask families who are making alternate arrangements to please notify the school.
