Continuing Student Learning
As part of our commitment to engage with our parents, I am providing an update on your child’s education and the next steps for student learning.
I am proud of the efforts that Foothills School Division staff has put in place over the last week to support learning for every student across the Division during these class cancellations. Starting this Monday, and each Monday thereafter, families will receive an email from their teacher on what learning will look like for the week.
Moving forward, Alberta Education has shared their expectations for student learning to continue. Student progress and curriculum will be assessed. Teachers will evaluate student outcomes and achievement will be communicated to parents through ongoing feedback and learner profiles.
With the support of the Board of Trustees, the entire team at FSD is dedicated to ensuring that each learner is successful and supported in their education. We cannot do this without you and value your continued support and our team is also here to support you. Our staff are ready and willing to help students and families through this modified learning environment.
I also understand that some within our division may be facing unique obstacles or challenges. If you or your child is in need of learning support please visit the Parent Learning Link on our website, or contact your child’s teacher or school. A staff member will be able to direct you or provide you with the available supports.
As Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta Chief Medical Officer of Health said, “There are no easy solutions to the situation we are in. We need to face this together, and respond to this extraordinary crisis with extraordinary kindness.”
I couldn’t agree more. Which is why, in the coming days we will be refunding activity fees that have been cancelled where possible. We recognize the urgency for families so we will also be finalizing reimbursement plans for other fees in the near future
Please know that the Board of Trustees also had a lengthy discussion on outstanding fee balances to help lessen the financial burden on Foothills families. The Board requested district office staff to prepare a detailed report for their consideration at the first Board meeting in May. At present we have suspended fee collection.
Our Board Chair Larry Albrecht has asked me to reassure you that we are making decisions on the best way to move forward regarding this and we are committed to having more details to share in the time ahead. As members of this community we are committed to responding with extraordinary kindness during these challenging times.
I am speaking to you today, not only as Superintendent of Schools for Foothills School Division, but as a father of two children who attend FSD schools.
As a father I know that my children are anxious about their new reality. Before learning continues next week I hope you join me in reassuring our children that one thing hasn’t changed. We will always be there for them. Now more than ever, they need this encouragement.
