Celebration and Event Update

May 20, 2021

Dear Foothills School Division families,

We have good news, the provincial guidance document for drive-in events was updated today to confirm that graduations and end of year celebrations can now occur in this format!  Thank you to everyone who took a moment to reach out to their MLA or contact Alberta Education or Alberta Health Services asking for this change.

What you need to know:

  • Our school teams are looking at opportunities to modify school events to meet these evolving guidelines and restrictions, please stay tuned for more information from your child’s school.
  • While the drive-in guidance document has been updated, the Alberta Guidance for K-12 Schools (page 15) has not.  We hope to receive this information in the coming days so that we can fully align all events with mandatory provincial health measures.
  • Given the size and complexity of these events, combined with a delay in provincial information, we are once again asking for your patience and flexibility as we navigate this update.

This will surely be a graduation to remember as it is unique, a new format for many, and something we will likely look back upon with fondness in the years to follow.

Thank you to our FSD team, students and community for your ongoing support throughout this most unique school year.  We look forward to welcoming all of our students and staff team back to school next Tuesday.

Sincerely,

Chris Fuzessy
Superintendent of Schools

May 14, 2021

Dear Foothills School Division families,

Everything we continue to do this year has been with student, staff, and community safety in mind.  Our schools and community continue to partner and provide support and a continuity of learning for our students, despite the complexity of the current provincial context.  Throughout all of this, I know that many families have questions about graduation celebrations and marking special and momentous occasions as the school year draws to a close.

On March 3, 2021 we shared that provincial restrictions continue to change and that we recognize the time commitment and dedication that goes into organizing these end of year events.  Provincial public health restrictions have changed once again, and can be viewed in our FSD Relaunch Handbook.  Among these new restrictions you will see that school celebrations:

  • Cannot include visitors and non-school based staff.
  • Must take place during school hours and on school property.
  • Cannot occur outside of existing cohort structures.
  • Recommend virtual opportunities instead of in-person events.

All end of year celebration events must occur within these guidelines and restrictions.  Planning for these events takes an incredible amount of volunteer and staff time.  To assist these teams, please know that even if provincial restrictions were to lessen in the coming weeks, we are unable to approve any logistical changes to events.

This was not an easy decision.  We know how important these milestone events are for students, their families, and our schools.  We all share in the desire to have our regular graduation events; however, we need to continue to work together in support of safe alternatives.

Please know that we remain proud of all of our graduates and their accomplishments. Our students have worked hard throughout a most unique school year and want to share these accomplishments with their friends, families, and our staff. You can expect to receive more details from your child’s school outlining their plans in the coming weeks.

Thank you to all of our students, staff, families, and communities for safely joining us in these end of year celebrations.

Chris Fuzessy
Superintendent of Schools
