Board Highlights - January 30

The Board acknowledges the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta and the Métis Nation of Alberta Region 3.

Presentation: Cameron Crossing School – Education Plan

Cameron Crossing Principal, Jeff Mason presented to the Board.  His address covered the work that focuses on preparing students for their future while ensuring personal best standards of academic excellence and what is being done to foster a safe, healthy and inclusive environment for learning.  Mr Mason shared many success stories and amazing connections being made between staff, students, and their families.

Foothills Regional Hub

Director of Inclusive Learning, Loriann Salmon, provided the Board with an update on the Foothills Regional Hub.  The Hub is a collaborative multi-Ministry team striving to build safer and healthier communities through mobilization of existing resources to support individuals/families at acutely elevated risk.  The primary purpose is to provide a venue for human service professionals, from a variety of disciplines, to collaborate on interventionist opportunities to address situations of risk that can’t be addressed by a single agency alone.  Secondly, to provide a collaborative forum to address potential or perceived gaps in service and provide feedback on identified needs and prevention opportunities in the community.

2019-2020 School Calendar

The Board passed a motion to approve the 2019-2020 School Calendar as presented.

2020-2021 and 2021-2022 School Calendar

The Board approved the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 School Calendars in principle as presented.

Learning Services Update

Learning is the core business of Foothills School Division and an update was given on the key work of Learning Services over the last 6-8 weeks and includes work that will be occurring in the near future.  Key focus areas and supporting strategies are focused on achieving the key priorities set by the board:

  • Priority One: Ensure broader access to consistent and high-quality learning for all students;
  • Priority Two: Establish system-wide excellence in teaching and leadership;
  • Priority Three:  Ensure that all students learn at high levels and are held to high standards;
  • Priority Four: Establish system-wide capacity to engage parents and the broader community as partners in promoting, supporting and information educational excellence.

AP305 – School Attendance Areas

Changes to AP305 were discussed and reviewed.  Students are expected to attend their designated school and the application form attached to this Administrative Procedure does not necessarily mean that students may attend their school of choice, but that a process will be followed to determine eligibility.

AP491 – Volunteer Coaches & Supervisors

Changes to AP491 were discussed and reviewed.  The updated procedure allows more flexibility in coaching staff in order to allow such activities to proceed.

AP260 – Field Trips

Changes to AP260 were discussed and reviewed.

Okotoks School Boundaries Update

Assistant Superintendent Drew Chipman provided an update on the public meeting held last week.  The Board of Trustees will receive all feedback for consideration before making a final decision in the first Board meeting in March. Online consultation remains open until Feb. 10

Review and Prioritize Advocacy Issues

Chair Albrecht asked Trustees if they could rank their advocacy issues in order of priority.  These issues will be shared with ASBA Zone 5 who will then be compiling a list of concerns to elevate provincially. The top two priorities identified were ‘implications of the new K-12 curriculum implementation and the need for more clarity and resources from Alberta Education’ and ‘mental health supports for children, youth and families’ followed by ‘French teacher training and recruitment’ and ‘regulatory changes’.

Public Announcements / Recognition / Division Highlights

  • The Board and Executive are saddened by the recent school bus accident outside Cayley.  They wish a speedy recovery to all involved and have supports in place for as long as may be needed.  Thanks were expressed to the first responders who took care of our students and bus driver on the scene.  Chair Albrecht also thanked Division Office and school staff for their support.
